Legionnaires’ disease kills fifth in Argentina, say

The Ministry of Health of the province of Tucumán announced on Saturday four past deaths, all at the San Miguel de Tucumán clinic, and said a total of 11 other people had become inflamed with the rare but serious lung disease.

The most recent death is that of a 64-year-old man suffering from comorbidities, he said.

Of the other six people infected, three remain in the hospital and the rest are monitored at home, said Luis Medina Cruz, Tucumán’s health minister.

Local officials said they were in the clinic’s water source and air conditioning system.

The disease, which first appeared at a 1976 conference of the American Legion veterans’ organization in the United States, has been linked to infected water and contaminated ventilation systems. Symptoms come with high fever, body aches, and shortness of breath.
