Laxman was named India’s interim head coach for the Asian Cup after Dravid was tested for Covid

VVS Laxman will take over as India’s interim coach for the Asian Cup after head coach Rahul Dravid underwent Covid-19 testing, the country’s Cricket Council (BCCI) announced on Wednesday.

Laxman, who is also head of cricket at the National Cricket Academy, had led the second-tier team that beat Zimbabwe in a three-day series this month.

Dravid tested positive on Tuesday ahead of the team’s departure to the UAE and will sign up for them once he tests negative and is cleared by BCCI’s medical team.

“Laxman. . . will oversee the team’s preparation in the absence of Rahul Dravid, who was tested for covid-19 before the team departed for the UAE,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

“Laxman has gotten into Dubai with Vice-Captain KL Rahul, Deepak Hooda and Avesh Khan, who travelled from Harare. “

India will begin their Asian Cup defence with Sunday’s clash with rival Pakistan in the six-team Twenty20 tournament.
