BRASILIA, 19 Sep (Reuters) – Brazil and Argentina, Latin American countries looking for more time to interact at the COVID-19 global vaccination center known as COVAX, said they intend to do so as soon as possible after not meeting Friday’s deadline.
Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday that it had monitored to signal the binding agreement on Friday and that it would have access to 12 million doses of COVID-19 COVAX vaccines, a program for bulk procurement and equitable distribution of potential vaccines.
Argentina has asked for more time to prepare the required documents, but plans to signal its commitment to the vaccination mechanism led by the World Health Organization on Wednesday, a ministry of fitness official told Reuters.
On Friday night, the Brazilian government said in a statement that it would sign with COVAX after negotiations with GAVI Alliance, which is coVAX’s secretariat.
“Buying a safe and effective vaccine is a priority for the federal government,” said one Brazilian.
Brazil faces the worst coronavirus outbreak after the United States and India, with 4. 5 million cases, and has the highest number of deaths worldwide in the United States.
A dozen countries in Central America and Latin America have informed WHO that they will request more time to sign after Friday’s deadline to formalize legally binding documents.
Brazil suggests that the GAVI Alliance agreed to give nations more time to enroll in COVAX.
A diplomat in Geneva said the application was submitted in the form of a letter on Friday and requested a month-overtime extension. The diplomat did not give the main points on explaining the delay.
He said the countries that had implemented it were Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Uruguay, Venezuela, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic.
