SAO PAULO (Reuters) – LATAM Airlines, the percentage market leader among airlines flying between Brazil and the United States in the quarter ended October, after resuming non-stop flights to Los Angeles, according to information published on Friday by local authority ANAC .
The Chilean airline, which surpassed the large American airlines American Airlines and United Airlines, transported more than 260,000 passengers between the two countries in the period.
The average cargo percentage for those flights, LATAM told Reuters, reached 89%.
LATAM was last in the most sensitive ranking for three consecutive months, between November 2019 and January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the air around the world, according to ANAC figures.
Brazil has the United States as its largest market for foreign flights in terms of the number of passengers carried, with a share of 18% this year, ahead of Argentina (15%) and Portugal (12%).
“This direction reflects the sustainable recovery of our overseas operations and the first year of our joint venture with Delta,” Aline Mafra, head of advertising for LATAM Brazil, told Reuters.
According to ANAC, the effects ensured LATAM a 26% market share for flights between the two most populous countries in the Americas in the August-October period, higher than American Airlines’ 22% and United Airlines’ 20%.
Year-to-date, American Airlines continues to lead the way with a market share of 23. 7%, higher than LATAM’s 22. 4% based on the number of passengers carried.
LATAM resumed flights between Sao Paulo and Los Angeles in August, making it the only nonstop flight between Brazil’s largest city and the U. S. West Coast, and expects to bring more than 110,000 people a year on that route.
It also introduced Sao Paulo-Boston flights last year, saying another 74,000 people have flown between the two cities, with an average load of 80%. The airline also operates flights to Miami, Orlando and New York.
LATAM and Delta have been working on the implementation of their joint venture since October last year and say they have managed to increase their capacity by 75%.
Delta is expected to resume flights from Rio de Janeiro to New York and Atlanta in December. In 2023, the U. S. airline is so far ranked fifth in traffic between the United States and Brazil, also behind Azul.
