Chronic malnutrition, the peak of food confidence inconvenience, affected 4. 7% of Brazilians between 2020 and 2022, or another 10. 1 million in absolute numbers. The figures can be found in the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, released this week by five UN specialized agencies.

The study shows that one in ten Brazilians (9. 9%) experienced a severe lack of food confidence between 2020 and 2022. In addition, nearly one-third (32. 8%) of the country’s population struggled with severe or moderate food inconfidence, or 70. 3 million Brazilians, compared to 18. 3% in 2014-2016.

The study describes severe lack of food confidence as a situation where other people have to go without eating at some point during the year, often for more than a day. Hunger itself, on the other hand, is a prolonged and uncomfortable and painful situation caused by lack of energy from food intake.

Finally, in conditions of moderate food insecurity, other people are unsure of their ability to feed themselves and are forced to rely on the quantity and quality of food they consume at certain times of the year due to economic circumstances.

UN agencies warn that famine has worsened in the latest reporting period, with 122 million new people facing the problem. In total, some 735 million more people suffer from hunger in the world, a number greater than the population of India or China, or the entire European continent.

The degradation of the landscape is related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as repeated clashes and conflicts, in addition to the war in Ukraine. With the trend revealed through statistics, the UN argues that the Sustainable Development Goal of ending hunger by 2030 must be achieved.

The knowledge about Brazil is part of a global one carried out through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Food Program (WFP).
