Kuwait’s new government swears in and ends political dispute

Sheikh Salem Abdullah al-Sabah appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs; Bader al-Mulla appointed oil minister

Kuwait’s crown prince was sworn in to the new government on Monday, state media reported, following a reshuffle aimed at addressing lawmakers’ objections to the initial composition of the cabinet and ending a protracted political dispute.

The crown prince, Sheikh Mehsal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has been trying to reach an impasse between the appointed government and the elected parliament that has hampered tax reforms.

Lawmakers have publicly criticized Sheikh Meshal’s Oct. 5 cabinet for not “reflecting” the effects of September’s snap parliamentary elections, in which opposition members made huge gains. The Emir in force – to delay the opening of Parliament, scheduled for last week.

But after talks between lawmakers and Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf al-Sabah, the Gulf OPEC oil maker announced several cabinet changes, new oil ministers and foreign ministers.
