Kuwait. Traffic worker in pre-trial detention for payment of driver’s license money

Cairo: Kuwaiti prosecutors have ordered the preventive detention of a transit worker suspected of illegally issuing dozens of driver’s licenses to expatriates in exchange for money, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported.

The alleged scam arose after the government recently began checking the driver’s licenses of expatriates in the country to exclude other ineligible people and revoke illegally issued licenses, Al Anba said, citing a security source.

Investigations revealed that dozens of licenses had been issued to expatriates for documents adding false university degrees, he added.

Expatriate holders were summoned and questioned. They admitted to providing cash to a Kuwaiti broker, who said he gave gifts to the traffic clerk, according to the source.

He summoned and prosecutors ordered his continued detention pending further questioning.

Kuwait announced earlier this month that it will review licenses for all expatriate driver’s licenses issued in years.

The Department of Relations and Security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that any foreign motive force that has obtained the motive force license in contravention of the country’s regulations will be summoned and the motive force license will be revoked irreversibly.

Nearly 200,000 driver’s licenses are in danger of being revoked as a result of the screening for foreigners who meet the requirements to obtain a driver’s license, according to Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai, which cites “well-informed” security sources.

“The opening of this case will take a long time to uncover the driver’s licenses that were issued illegally,” the appeals said.

Expatriates in Kuwait about 800,000 driver’s licenses, the resources said.

Foreigners make up only about 3. 4 million of Kuwait’s total population of about 4. 6 million.
