Kuwait rethinks opening up expats abroad

Cairo: The Kuwaiti government has said apartment rentals for expats from the personal sector who stay more than six months will be automatically cancelled, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported.

The Interior Ministry said the length of stay of those expatriates outside Kuwait would be calculated from May 1 to October 31 and the iqamas would be cancelled, Al Rai added.

These expatriates, known as Article 18 compliant iqamat holders, are not allowed to stay outside Kuwait for more than six months, the ministry added.

Similarly, according to Al Rai, expats with a dependent apartment permit will likely no longer be allowed to stay outside Kuwait for more than six months, ending an indefinite apartment system.

The new rule will come into force before the end of this year and will also apply to holders of so-called Article 24 iqama expatriates, i. e. self-employed foreign workers, the Array newspaper added, citing security sources.

“Based on humanitarian considerations, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Home Ministry has allowed all remaining foreign nationals to renew their iqamas online and remain outside the country [Kuwait] for an indefinite period,” the resources said. .

“But now that the fitness scenario has taken a step forward in the country, there is no justification for maintaining those exceptional measures,” they added.
