Kuwait: one-year visa extension for expats over 60

Kuwait: The Public Work Authority has started applying for a one-year paint permit only for those over 60 and who do not have a university degree, Al Qabas reported.

The employment branch of the public labour authority has implemented this policy verbally and informed those who have renewed their visas that they will not be able to renew their painting permit in a year unless the policy is changed, according to a source who spoke. The Qabas.

The source added that the resolution aimed to address demographic imbalances, adjust checkpoints and supervision in the personal sector, and track the number of “marginal workers” in Kuwait.

Labour statistics revealed that 83,562 expats over the age of 60 resided in Kuwait. Of these, 15,847 are illiterate, 24,000 can read and write, 10,000 have a number one degree, 16,000 have an intermediate degree and 16,000 have a high school diploma.

Demographic imbalance

On Sunday, the National Assembly’s human resources progression committee began to consider the government’s proposals, as well as parliamentarians, which established policies that would reduce the number of expats in Kuwait.

One of the proposals put forward would result in the departure of 360,000 expats: illegal licensees, expats over 60 and “marginal workers”.

The demographic imbalance has been discussed through government officials and parliamentarians, noting that 70% of Kuwait’s population are expatriates.

In addition, xenophobia and hatred of expats have a greater impact on social media. In April, when the COVID-19 crisis intensified, many expatriates blamed expats for the spread of the virus.
