Kuwait: Five expats at risk of deportation for illegal fishing

Cairo: Kuwaiti police are detaining five expatriates for deportation after they were caught fishing illegally, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported.

The five, who are Egyptian citizens, were trapped while fishing in Kuwait Bay in violation of environmental regulations, Al Anba added.

When his boat searched, the coast guard also discovered several seagulls in violation of Kuwait’s environmental law, he added.

Expatriates admitted to hunting the birds with the aim of promoting them, the newspaper said.

Kuwait unveiled earlier this year a plan to deport expatriates convicted of primary environmental crimes.

The Kuwait Public Environmental Authority has decreed the “immediate expulsion” of any expatriate who commits serious environmental violations, such as illegal fishing in Kuwait Bay, theft of sand, or removal of debris in non-designated areas.

In months, Kuwaiti media have reported that the punishment has been applied to several expatriates caught for environmental crimes.

Foreigners make up only about 3. 4 million of Kuwait’s total population of 4. 6 million.
