New Delhi: Kuwait on Sunday honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Order of Mubarak the Great, the country’s national honour, for his role in strengthening relations between the two countries.

The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, presented the award to Modi at Bayan Palace on Sunday morning. The Kuwaiti Prime Minister, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, was present on the occasion.

Modi dedicated the award to the long-standing friendship between India and Kuwait, Kuwait’s one million Indian population and India’s 1. 4 billion population.

“I am revered to have the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Order obtained from His Highness the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. I dedicate this honor to the other peoples of India and to the strong friendship between India and Kuwait,” Modi said in X.

The Emir of Kuwait told Modi: “This is our medal and you deserve it. We have had ties with the Republic of India for many years.

The presentation of the award, the first stop by an Indian Prime Minister in Kuwait in 43 years, “added special importance to the occasion”, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The award was instituted in 1974 and among its recipients are Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, former US presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton, and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Modi has won state honors from 19 countries, the Order of King Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, the Order of the State of Palestine, the Order of Zayed of the United Arab Emirates, the Order of Fiji and the Order of the Nile of Egypt.

Last month, Modi was awarded the Nigerian Grand Commander of the Order of Niger for his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations, as well as the Dominica Honorary Award in recognition of his contributions to the Covid-19 pandemic and his role in strengthening the bilateral partnership.
