BEIJING (AP) — The leader of Komeito, the junior spouse of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s coalition, is expected to forgo a trip to China tentatively scheduled for this month, several sources familiar with China-Japan relations said.
Natsuo Yamaguchi’s plans would likely have been affected by Tokyo’s recent tightening of border controls on visitors from mainland China amid a surge in coronavirus infections in the country after Beijing particularly relaxed its strict antivirus measures last month.
China criticized Japan’s decision, saying anti-virus measures deserve to be “science-based and proportionate” and do not deserve a comprehensive body of workers’ exchanges and cooperation.
