Neighboring Kazakhstan, which has also reported an increase in pneumonia cases, said it would do the same from next month, which would also lead to a unique increase in the number of pneumonia.

The two Central Asian countries are suffering to stop the virus after ending their initial closures in May, and this month Kazakhstan imposed a momentary closure after hospitals were filled in several major cities.

Kazakhstan’s Health Minister Alexei Tsoy said in a briefing on Friday that The Nur-Sultan government would begin publishing combined figures from 1 August.

The number of deaths from pneumonia has increased by 75% so far from year to year in 2019, he said, achieving 3327. Kazakhstan reported 66,895 cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with 464 deaths. (Reporting through Olzhas Auyezov in Almaty and Olga Dzyubenko in Bishkek; edited by Catherine Evans)
