Harris joined her and Walz’s family as red, white and blue balloons fell from the ceiling.
A conference official said more than 100,000 balloons were ready so far.
The conference temporarily ended with a blessing, ending DNC 2024.
Harris concluded her nomination speech by asking Americans to “write the next wonderful bankruptcy in the most ordinary story ever told. ”
“Now it’s up to us to do what the generations before us did,” he said. “Guided by optimism and faith, to fight for this country we love, to fight for the ideals we hold dear, and to take on the enormous duty that comes with the greatest privilege on Earth: the privilege and pride of being an American. ”
“So let’s go,” he says. “We’re going for this. ”
Harris said she and Biden were “working around the clock” to secure a ceasefire and hostage-taking agreement between Israel and Hamas.
“I will protect Israel’s right to protect itself,” he said. “I will make sure that Israel has the ability to protect itself. ”
But he said what happened in Gaza, during the 10-month war, is “devastating. ”
“So many innocent lives have been lost,” he said. Desperate and hungry people fleeing in search of safety. “The magnitude of the suffering is heartbreaking. ”
Harris blamed Trump for the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Trump appointed three justices to the court, a conservative supermajority.
“Donald Trump chose members of the United States Supreme Court to suppress reproductive freedom and now he brags about it,” he said.
He said Americans have shared stories of miscarriages in a parking lot, sepsis and loss of the ability to have children again.
“This is what’s happening in our country because of Donald Trump,” he said, warning that “it’s not over. ”
He said he would limit himself to birth control, ban medication abortion, enact a national ban on abortion, and require states to report miscarriages and female abortions.
“Simply put, they’re crazy,” he said.
On immigration, Harris accused Trump of sabotaging a bipartisan immigration bill negotiated in the Senate that collapsed after Trump opposed it. The bill would have included billions of dollars in new spending for border security and reforming key elements of the country’s asylum system.
“But Donald Trump believes a border deal would hurt his campaign. He ordered
“Well, I refuse to play politics with our security. “
As president, Harris said, she pledged to “bring back the bipartisan border security bill she killed” and “sign it into law. “
He continued, “I know we can live up to our proud heritage as a country of immigrants and reform our broken immigration system. We can create a well-deserved path to citizenship and protect our border.
Harris attacked Trump, calling him an “unserious man” and warned Americans of the “extremely serious” consequences of his return to the White House.
“Consider how strong that is going to be, especially after the United States Supreme Court just ruled that it would be immune from criminal prosecution,” he said. “Imagine Donald Trump without safeguards and how he would use the immense forces of the United States Presidency, not to improve his life, not for our national security, but to serve the only consumer he has ever had: himself. ”
Harris officially confirmed the party’s nomination: “Throughout my career, I’ve had only one client: the others. And so, in the calling of others, in the calling of one or both Americans, regardless of party, race, gender, or what language your grandmother speaks, on behalf of my mom and all who have embarked on their own unlikely journey, on behalf of Americans like the other people I grew up with, Other people who paint a lot, pursue their goals. dreams and concern for others, on behalf of all those whose history can only be written in the greatest country in the world, I am content with your appointment as President of the United States of America. “
Harris began her speech by thanking President Biden, calling his character “inspirational” and predicting that history would view her record in office favorably.
The vice president used her comments to share the story of her life, raised by a single mother in California, who immigrated to the United States when she was 19.
“The path that has brought me here in recent weeks is certainly unexpected,” he said. “But I’m no stranger to improbable journeys. “
She remembers moving around as a child and eventually settling in San Francisco, where she was raised through a network of caregivers. Harris shared with the audience the classes she learned from her mother, adding “never do anything by halves,” which she said is a “direct quote. “
Shortly after 10:30 p. m. , Harris emerged to thunderous applause from the crowd to begin her acceptance speech.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said it’s “the last status between you and the moment we’ve all been waiting for. ”
Cooper called Harris a “great fighter” capable of taking on “a lot of wonderful fights ahead of us. ”
“Even if you don’t agree with her on everything, Kamala Harris will fight for you until the end,” he said.
He said he would fight for families who want better physical health or safer places to live, for parents who want better schools, for employees worried about retirement, and he would have the support of United States allies.
“And when she fights, we win,” he said. Kamala is ready. Will we stand up and fight for Kamala like she will for us?”
Maya Harris, sister of the vice president, spoke about her mother, who immigrated to the United States from India and is a breast cancer scientist.
“Mom understood the strength and the option of knowing and appearing who we are. I knew we could be the writers of our own stories, just as she had been the writer of hers,” he said. Declared.
Harris said that while Americans may differ in their struggles, histories and perspectives, “what unites us is the fervent preference to be free, to realize the perspective that God has given us. “
Harris said her sister knows what it’s like to be the underdog, but she will fight for the country and unite it.
“That’s why we want your leadership at this historic moment,” he said.
Harris has accused Republicans of failing to push the country back, but her sister seeks unity and progress.
“My sister says to wait now, that we may not come back,” he said. “Because Kamala understands that we have much more vital than what separates us. “
Harris said the country will have to “elect a leader who sees the future in each of us, a leader who cares about all of us, a leader who fights for all of us. “Our Democratic nominee, my older sister, the next president of the United States, Kamala Harris. “
Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger criticized Trump, saying the GOP had lost its power under him.
“Donald Trump has suffocated the soul of the Republican Party,” he said. “His basic weakness has spread through me like a disease. “
He said the Republican Party had “switched its allegiance” in favor of a “man whose target is himself. ”
“Donald Trump is a weak guy who pretends to be strong. A short guy who pretends to be tall. A fake guy who pretends to be fair. A bully who still can’t help but play the role of victim. He puts on a “But there is nothing genuine there, it is strength. ”
Kinzinger is one of the few Republicans who openly opposed Trump at the convention. He said that he is still a Republican, but that he had to put the country first and that he would vote for Harris.
“I never thought I’d be here. And, look, you never imagined seeing me here, did you?”Said.
“But I learned something about the Democratic Party and I need to reveal this secret to my Republican colleagues. The Democrats are as patriotic as we are,” he said to loud applause. “They love this country as much as we do. And they are just as interested in protecting American values. at home and abroad as we conservatives have been. I was relieved to notice that. ”
He Harris shared his commitment to the rule of law, the Constitution and democracy.
“To my fellow Republicans, if you swear allegiance to those principles, I suspect you belong here as well,” he said.
Actress Eva Longoria led the crowd in a chant that revolved around the word “Yes we can. ”
“Tonight I’m here to tell you: yes, she can. She can,” he said. “Our votes, our vote, we will be in this election. “
Longoria made her appearance at last week’s conference with the Texas delegation when she voted for Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee.
“Kamala’s good luck is our good luck, and she is also helping us dream big,” he said.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Harris’ upbringing is comparable to that of millions of Americans, but she said Trump couldn’t relate to those experiences.
“She lived a life like ours. She knows us,” he said. “Donald Trump doesn’t know you at all. Do you think he understands that when your car breaks down you can’t go to work? No. His first word is probably ‘chauffeur’. Do you think he ever had to remove car parts before paying ?” Damn, do you think he’s ever been to a grocery store?
Whitmer painted a picture of the next 4 years, receiving an informational alert in the midst of life’s chaos when “something hit the fan. “
“You’ll wonder, ‘Will my family be okay?’ And then he asks, ‘Who the hell is in charge?’ What if it’s him? What if it’s ‘that guy from Mar-a-Lago’? Trump called Whitmer “that woman from Michigan. “
The governor said the country has a choice of who will lead it in the next crisis.
“Why not choose a tough, proven and absolutely tough leader?I know who I need as commander in chief,” Whitmer said. “United States, let’s be Kamala Harris. “
Rep. Rubén Gallego, a Senate candidate from Arizona, emphasized his experience in the military and called out dozens of other Democratic veterans in his speech.
We stand united – veterans, Democrats and patriots – to fight for all who have served our country. But politicians like Donald Trump are not on our side. They treat patriots like Senator McCain like losers. John McCain is an American hero. Show respect. “Trump’s 2025 plan will cut veterans’ benefits and force VA hospitals to close across the country,” Gallego said.
“Show respect. “
Leon Panetta, former White House leader and Obama’s former defense secretary, said the country needed a “serene leader commander like Harris. “
“Our warriors want a tough, calm commander in chief to protect our democracy from tyrants and terrorists. We want Kamala Harris as Resolute,” he said.
Panetta has an idea of what those decision-making moments look like. He gave the order that killed Osama bin Laden.
“I ordered our special operations forces to fly two helicopters 150 miles at night and when the sun came up, Osama bin Laden was dead,” Panetta said. “Because no one attacks our country and comes out unscathed. That’s what our warriors do. “
Panetta said Harris “recognizes a tyrant when she sees him, and our allies recognize a leader when they see him. “
“Trump tells tyrants like Putin that they can do whatever they want,” he said. “Kamala Harris tells the bullies, ‘You can do it. Not under my supervision. ‘”
Panetta said the country wants a leader who respects fallen service members.
“They are idiots, they are losers, they are our heroes,” he said.
Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly touted Harris’ expertise in foreign policy and national security, but began his speech by saying that “President Obama had to stick to Michelle. I had to stick to Gabthrough and Pink. “
He praised his spouse, Gabby Giffords, and said he was able to speak at the conference thanks to a team of doctors, nurses and his speech therapist.
“We all want a team,” he said. I flew 4 times into space. I participated in fights almost 40 times. Not once have I done it alone,” he said. We are a team to fulfill a mission. This is still the case. “
Kelly said Russia, North Korea, Iran and China were watching the country intensely and criticized Trump for skipping his intelligence briefings, as well as for the derogatory comments he allegedly made about the U. S. military.
“If we fall into the trap again and make him commander-in-chief, the idiots will be us,” he said.
Kelly said that while “the world laughs at Trump,” he praised Harris for her NATO, Ukraine and a relaxed and fair election.
“The world is laughing at Trump. Literally. But friends, it’s not funny,” he said. “When he was president, he meant the world laughed at us. The threats we face are too serious. The sacrifices made by our foot soldiers” are too sacred. The alliances we have built over decades are too critical. That’s what’s at stake now. The selection is not even tight. “
Kelly, among Democrats, is considered Harris’ running mate.
Singer Pink sang her hit song “What About Us” with her daughter Willow Sage Hart after Giffords’ speech. The Grammy Award winner supported Mr. Biden and Harris in 2020.
Former Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was shot in the head in an assassination attempt in 2011 and has since become a prominent advocate for stricter gun laws, appeared at the same level as her spouse, Sen. Mark Kelly, to deliver brief remarks.
“I died. But I fought for my life and I survived. I learned to walk again, step by step. I learned to talk again, word by word,” he said.
“So other people helped me while I worked hard to recover, and added a fair guy from Delaware who took care of me. He still does. Thank you, Joe Biden. Thank you for everything. Joe is a wonderful president,” he said. Giffords continued. Array “And my friend Kamala will be a wonderful president. She’s tough. She’s got courage. Kamala can beat the gun lobby. “
Five Americans who lost loved ones to gun violence shared their stories, adding Rep. Lucy McBath, the Georgia congresswoman who lost her 17-year-old son Jordan when he was shot and killed in 2012.
“I saw firsthand the need to tell our stories,” he said.
Abbey Clements, who taught at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, said the young scholars and teachers lost on Dec. 14, 2012, are still there.
“On December 14, 2012, I walked into Sandy Hook School,” he recalls. “Suddenly there came a loud crash, like that of a steel folding chair. One hundred and fifty-four shots rang out. I hid in my coats, I tried to sing with my students, I tried to make them read, I tried to drown out the sounds. I bring this terrible day with me. Twenty first graders were murdered.
Kim Rubio’s daughter, Lexi, was just 10 years old when a mass shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. One minute, the school identified Lexi for getting all A’s.
“Thirty minutes later, a gunman murdered him, along with 18 classmates and two teachers,” Rubio said. “They take us to a personal room where the police tell us they will be coming home. “
Melody McFadden of South Carolina recalls seeking information after learning that there had been a shooting in Myrtle Beach, where her niece was visiting. McFadden lost his own mother when she shot and killed through an abusive partner.
“No one can locate Sandy,” he recalls. I remain calm. “Finally, she contacted the coroner.
Ten years later, the murder of his niece remains unsolved. “I will continue to call and I will continue to fight,” he said.
Edgar Vilchez, from Chicago, at the top school when his classmate fired.
“It replaced my story,” he said. Instead of worrying about taking an exam, I’m worried about living to take another exam. They say that schools are made for learning and I learned a lot that day. I learned to run, hide and let myself down. Here’s what happens. In the news, it can happen to me. “
Comedian and actor D. L. Hughley told some jokes apologizing to Harris.
“I don’t blame Donald Trump for no less debating Kamala,” he said. “I’ve been married to a black woman for 40 years and I haven’t won a single debate. ”
“Trump says Kamala is black,” he said. I assure you that Kamala has been Black for much longer than Trump has been a Republican. ”
“If she continues to fall in the polls as she does, the way to keep Kamala out of the White House is to buy her and refuse to rent her to her. ”
Hughley said he had made assumptions about Harris before and repeated them to many other people without conducting any research.
“I’m here to apologize to the world,” he said. “I was wrong, and I’m so glad I was wrong, because Kamala, you give me hope for the future. ”
Biden, who is vacationing in Santa Ynez, California, said in a social media post that he and the first Dr. Biden. Jill Biden spoke with Harris before she delivered her acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“Jill and I just talked to @KamalaHarris; We cannot wait for her to settle for this historic appointment,” he wrote. “Kamala and Tim will motivate an entire generation and guide us into the future. “
The message included a photo of the president, holding a mobile phone, and the first girl’s status in front of a television broadcasting the convention.
White House spokeswoman Emilie Simons said the Bidens Harris wished her well.
Two of Harris’ great-nieces appeared on the floor next to Kerry Washington to help explain the pronunciation of the vice president’s name.
Trump and other Republicans have continually mispronounced Harris’ first call. In an interview with CNN earlier this month, Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said she would “say the Kamala call I want. ”
“I’ve observed that other people are having difficulty, or pretending to be struggling, in delivering the call of our president for the long term,” Washington said. “Écoutez-moi. La confusion is understandable. Lack of respect is not. “
Washington invited the two women on stage, who led the crowd in composing the song “Kamala,” explaining that the pronunciation is like “comma” and “la. “
Actress Kerry Washington, star of the television series “Scandal,” is the evening’s prime-time celebrity host. She said she wasn’t at the Democratic National Committee tonight as an actress.
“I’m here as a mother, as a daughter and as a proud member of the union,” Washington said. “I am here as the granddaughter of immigrants, as a black descendant of slaves. I’m here because I’m an American and because I’m a voter. “
“I am the main character in this story. You are,” Washington said.
Washington, whose character is Olivia Pope on the show, told the audience: “You are the Olivia Popes. ”
“You are the superheroes who save this democracy,” he said. “You, I, have the greatest strength to convince your loved ones to vote. So, as Michelle Obama told us, let’s do something. ”
Washington began looking to take a selfie video with the crowd when actor Tony Goldwyn, who plays the president and his love on the show, rushed up to the level to register for her. Together, they took a selfie video with the crowd in the background for attendees to send to their circle of family and friends.
Grammy Award-winning band The Chicks took the stage to sing the national anthem, kicking off at 9 p. m. party. ET time.
Several families rose to the level to warn against Trump’s reelection.
His wife and mother, Anya Cook, said she had a miscarriage two years ago and doctors refused to see her because of abortion restrictions in her state.
“I had a miscarriage in the bathroom,” she said. “I’ll never see my husband’s face as he tried to prevent bleeding, trying to prevent what the doctors deserve to have done. “
When he got medical help, he had lost some of his blood.
The family of Brian Sicknick, an officer who died as a result of the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, also spoke. Brian’s brother, Craig, said his family “knows how dangerous Trump is. ”
“We want a genuine leader, not an autocrat stuck in the past,” Sicnkick said. “Brian, we miss you every day. ”
Eric Fitts, a father of two, said he tries to set an example for them, instilling character and values in them.
“I need those values to be reflected in our leaders,” Fitts said. “I’m tired of all this hate. It is time to move forward together and build a country that our young people can be proud of. ”
Texas Rep. Colin Allred will face Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in November and has pledged to turn the Senate seat blue. A former football player, he most recently represents Texas’ 32nd Congressional District.
“In the NFL, we had a term for guys like Donald Trump and my opponent, Ted Cruz: ‘yo-guys,'” he said. “You know that guy: he communicates a great game, he only cares about himself. But you don’t need to be stuck with him at a barbecue. The fact is, America has never turned to ‘me. ‘”
Echoing former President Barack Obama, who said “the harshest word in our democracy is the word ‘we,'” Allred said he had a message for so-called “boy-selves. “
“‘We’ are tougher than ‘me,'” he said. We will repair reproductive freedom. We will protect the border. We will protect Medicare and Social Security, and we will turn the page and write a new bankruptcy for this country: we will elect Kamala Harris as the next president and we will defeat Ted Cruz. “
After concluding his speech, the crowd sang “Beat Ted Cruz. “
Steph Curry, a four-time NBA champion and recent Olympic gold medalist, made the impression in a video expressing hers for Harris.
“I think Kamala, as president, can regain that unity and continue to move our country forward,” the Golden State Warriors guard said. “It’s about preserving hope and trust in our country, ensuring that families can be taken care of during their most precious moments. “
Curry recalls meeting Harris at the White House after the Warriors’ last championship in 2022: “I can tell you one thing: I knew then, and I know now, that the Oval Office suits him. “
He concluded: “So, in the words of Michelle Obama: do something!Go vote, be active. Let’s demonstrate in November like never before. It’s been an honor for me to constitute our country, it’s an honor for Kamala, so let’s go through it. ” Let’s all do our part. “
Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost, the first Gen Z member of Congress, his comments on climate change.
“Fighting the climate crisis is patriotic,” he said. “And unlike Donald Trump, our patriotism is more than a damn slogan in a hat. It’s about caring about the other people who live in this country. Because when you love someone, you need them to have a blank air. When you love someone, you need them to have blank water and when you love someone, you need them to have a decent job.
Frost remembers visiting communities that had to rebuild their lives after their homes were destroyed by hurricanes. He said he has heard the stories of immigrant farmers who are “forced to work in terrible situations and exasperated by this crisis. ”
“Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have shown that addressing this crisis creates jobs,” he said. “That investing in electricity protects our health. That investing in public transportation builds strong communities. And we will have to not do it. “Let us forget that peace is essential for our climate and that war destroys our environment. This choice is about each and every drop of water that we consume and breathe.
When Harris takes the stage at the conference later tonight to officially accept the Democratic nomination for president, she will tell the audience her story of how she was raised by a single mother in California and what motivated her to run for prosecutor.
According to excerpts from her speech, the vice president will urge the electorate to use the November elections as an opportunity to move forward and dedicate themselves to unifying the country.
“With these elections, our country has a valuable and fleeting opportunity to overcome the bitterness, cynicism and conflicts of the past,” he will say. “A possibility to chart a new path forward, as members of a party or faction, but as Americans. “
He will also warn the country about the timing of Trump’s mandate, invoking Project 2025 and the policy proposals outlined in the vast timeline overseen through The Heritage Foundation, a conservative tank.
“In many ways, Donald Trump is a serious man,” Harris said. “But the consequences of Donald Trump’s return to the White House are incredibly severe. “
She will draw on her travels, her time as vice president and her crusade, telling attendees that she sees “a country poised to move forward. “
“I see an America where we hold firmly to the fearless confidence that built our country and emboldened the world,” Harris said. “Here, in this country, everything is possible. Nothing is out of our reach. “
Four members of the so-called Central Park Five were brought to the conference through the Rev. Al Sharpton. The Central Park Five were an organization of Black and Latino teenagers arrested and charged in the rape and assault of a white jogger in Central Park in 1989. They were wrongfully convicted in 1990 and exonerated when DNA evidence compared them to that of another guy who confessed to the attack. Their convictions were overturned in 2002.
“Our young people have been stolen from us. Every day when we walked into the courtroom, other people were yelling at us and threatening us because of Donald Trump,” Wise said. “He spent $85,000 on a full-page ad in the New York Times. ” York Times calling for our execution. “We were innocent children, but we have served a total of 41 years in prison. “
Yusef Salaam, now a member of the New York City Council, said Trump sought him and the other four men, who were teenagers at the time of the affair, dead.
“45 looked for us dead,” he said.
Despite DNA testing and the confession, Trump said he wouldn’t do it because of comments he made more than 30 years ago.
“This guy believes that hate is the driving force in United States. That’s not the case,” Salaam said. We have a constitutional right to vote; In reality, it is an enormous right. So let’s use it. I need you to march with us. I need you to march with us. I need you to vote with us. “
The Rev. Al Sharpton, a veteran civil rights leader, promised that the country would “roll back” all its advances before introducing the Central Park Five.
Sharpton alluded to Trump’s comments that immigrants take “black jobs,” a comment for which Trump did apologize.
Sharpton said Trump and others would be briefed in November.
“We fought too hard for the women to tell us to get out of the kitchen,” Sharpton said. “Now we’re on our way to the Oval Office. We’ll be back. “
And the country may not go backwards after fighting for LGBTQ equality, Sharpton said, nor will it give up the right to vote.
“We suffered, we died and bled, we went to prison to obtain the right to vote; we will pass again,” he said.
Representative Elissa Slotkin, a Senate candidate in the state of Michigan, introduced her as a former national security official. She served in the CIA and served three terms in Iraq, and served as acting deputy secretary of Defense during former President Barack Obama’s administration.
“I need to talk tonight about national security,” Slotkin said. “Because the selection in November is difficult. The United States withdraws from global or global regulations. Trump needs to push us back. He greatly admires dictators. He treats our friends as adversaries and our adversaries as friends. But our vision is in “Our values, the ones that brought us to the coast of Normandy and helped us win the Cold War. “
Slotkin said the United States will have to work with its allies to deal with demanding global situations such as artificial intelligence and climate change.
“And guess what, you need friends, you have to have friends to do that,” he said.
Slotkin suggested that Americans “not give an inch to contenders who wrap themselves in the flag, but spit in the face of the freedoms it represents. “
And he concluded: “We are the United States of America.
New York Rep. Pat Ryan, an Iraq War veteran, said Harris treats service members and veterans with respect and dignity, while Trump disrespects them.
“At West Point, they will be informed of the honor code: ‘A cadet shall not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do,'” he said. “Well, there is a candidate who violated each and every one of the words of that code. A serial liar, a cheater, and a thief who looked infantrymen in the eye, then turned around and called the fallen heroes “fools” and “losers” who insulted Medal of Honor. The recipients of the honor were last week.
He then used military jargon to describe the former president.
“I would tell them what I think about Donald Trump, but they told me I couldn’t use that word on television,” he said. “I’m going to use a military term: FUBAR. If you don’t know FUBAR, Google it. ”
The 2025 Project returned on the final night of the convention, with Democratic Rep. Jason Crow highlighting some of the initiative’s plans for national security and foreign policy.
“I refuse to tell Trump’s golfing buddies when and how our troops will be sent to war,” he said.
Crow, a former Army ranger, said smart leaders don’t interact through “harsh communications or pats on the chest. “
“In war, talking costs nothing,” he said. And I, I recognize a couch command when I see it. “
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. , took the level to loud applause from conference attendees and became emotional, wiping tears from her eyes before she began speaking.
In her remarks, the Massachusetts Democrat took aim at Trump for his conviction by a New York jury in late May on 34 counts of tampering with business records and ongoing legal issues due to the 2020 presidential election.
“Donald Trump, the con man, has no plan to lower prices for families. He doesn’t know how and deep down he doesn’t care,” he told conference attendees. “When have you refuelled or worried about the supermarket bill? The expenses you are concerned about come from your criminal defense attorneys. “
Warren congratulated Harris on her economic policies and highlighted her efforts to fight the California wildfires and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You know what I like most about Kamala Harris?Kamala Harris can’t be bought and she can’t be directed,” Warren said.
The senator said she would not accept Trump or Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance supervising families on issues such as the value of food, gasoline, housing, physical care, taxes and abortion.
“Gee, I wouldn’t accept those guys moving my couch,” he said, referencing a joke about Vance that went viral on social media.
Warren faced Harris, Biden and a wide range of hopefuls in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee and the special subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis, said his job in Congress is to examine China. He noted that one of China’s most level-headed leaders had written an e-book called “United States Against America. “
“That’s how they think they’re going to win,” Krishnamoorthi said of China. “They know that the only way to beat United States is to beat ourselves. ”
“Remember my words, them seeing Donald Trump at the negotiating table,” he said.
Krishnamoorthi said Trump would “pit Americans against Americans, and that’s what China wants. ”
Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey, a vulnerable Democrat, has sued the companies for securities fraud and greed, calling it “greed. ”
“In just six months, a box of diapers has gone up to $15. Large corporations say their costs have risen
because their prices are increasing. They are promoting a lie to you. It’s in the bag with the diapers. Prices are going up because those corporations are conspiring to push them through,” he said.
The three-term senator faces a re-election war with former hedge fund CEO David McCormick.
He said he and Harris are fighting to ban theft of value.
“Americans don’t expect things to be free, but they do expect them to be fair,” he said.
Sen. Tammy of Wisconsin said her mother struggled with addiction and never knew her father. But she had two grandparents who stepped in and raised her.
“Everything I know, I know from them,” he said.
As her grandparents grew older, she said it was a privilege for her to take care of them.
But he noted that Trump said “a lot can be done . . . in terms of cutting” Social Security and Medicare, and said Democrats would protect rights.
“We Democrats honor our elders and ask the wealthiest to pay their share,” he said.
A spokesperson for the Trump crusade said Trump was referring to “reducing fraud and fraud,” not Social Security and other rights. Throughout his crusade toward 2024, Trump has consistently said he has no plans to cut Social Security or Medicare.
Baldwin faces a re-election fight in November, and his presence is notable. Other vulnerable Democrats, including Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, Jacky Rosen of Nevada and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, skipped the conference altogether.
Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge detailed Harris’ portrait as a prosecutor struggling to confront foreclosure and the Biden administration’s housing-focused efforts.
“Kamala Harris has fought to protect landlords and tenants throughout her career,” he said.
Fudge said Harris believed housing was a “human right. “
“We can return the keys to our housing policy to a negligent landlord or elect a president who believes in affordable housing for all,” he said.
Sen. Alex Padilla of California spoke about how Harris treats her three children: “She receives them with kindness and respect. ”
“You literally have to meet them at their level, communicate with them and pay attention to them,” he said.
“Kamala and I believe that all of our young people deserve a chance to achieve the American dream,” he said. “But today we know that this dream is out of reach for many families. ”
He asked the crowd: “Who is in a position to defend the dream?”
Padilla took Harris’ Senate seat when she was vice president.
Leaders of the two largest unions argued that Harris would deliver on United States’ promise, starting with education.
“As an eighth-grade science instructor for more than 30 years, I can tell you that Kamala and teacher Ttim Walz sense that when our public schools are strong, our country is strong,” said Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association. “They know that expanding free school meals, investing in physical care, and maintaining our communities and schools creates opportunities for everyone. ”
Pringle said former President Donald Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee J. D. Vance “will shut down the Department of Education and Head Start and make educators pay a higher percentage of taxes than billionaires. “
Randi Weingarten, who heads the American Federation of Teachers, said Trump and Vance “can’t pretend they’re pro-kids while gutting investment for public schools. “
