Tropical Storm Julia continues to weaken after making landfall early Sunday in Nicaragua as a Category 1 with winds of 85 mph. (FOX Weather)
Tropical Storm Julia made landfall in Nicaragua early Sunday as a Category 1 hurricane, and while the typhoon has continued to weaken as it moves through Central America, there is a constant risk of life-threatening flash flooding and landslides in the region.
Julia became a hurricane on Saturday, just hours before arriving near Laguna de Perlas, Nicaragua.
The fifth hurricane of the season is expected to threaten the U. S. Gulf Coast. The formula will likely tear through Central America’s rugged terrain as it continues to move inland.
There are just under two months left of the Atlantic hurricane season, so it’s not unusual for the tropics to remain active in October. The month ranks as the third maximum active month (after September and August) for tropical activity in the Atlantic basin, generating approximately two named storms each year, one of which becomes a hurricane.
CENTRAL AMERICA SUSPENDED DUE TO HURRICANE DISASTERS

Tropical Storm Julia is moving west at 15 mph and this movement is expected to continue through the day.

“Hurricane Bonnie, if you remember, had its characteristics, crossed the land and continued,” said FOX Weather meteorologist Craig Herrera. “When it came back over the Pacific, it retained those lower-level characteristics, so it kept its name, Bonnie. We may see it again. It will be very attractive to watch.
