Plaintiffs’ lawyers said 84 citizens died and about the same number became ill. A total of 164 plaintiffs come with veterans who tested positive for the disease and survived, as well as the families of those who died. Several of the veterans who survived COVID-19 have died for other reasons since the complaint was filed, Aleo said.
“The families are grateful that we were able to bring this case to a successful conclusion,” Aleo said. “Proving the case would have taken years. “
The initial settlement amount announced in May was $56 million, but increased to about $58 million with the addition of three other plaintiffs, he said.
Families of deceased veterans will get a minimum of $400,000 each, while veterans who contracted the disease and survived will get a minimum of $10,000 under the terms of the settlement.

The defendants in the case were 4 former state space executives and the secretary of fitness and human services, the state firm overseeing the facility. With the approval of the settlement, which is paid through the state, claims opposing the five were dropped.
