Dutch national Joran van der Sloot is driven in a police vehicle from a maximum-security criminal to an airport to be extradited to the United States outside Lima, Peru. Van der Sloot, the prime suspect in Natalee Holloway’s 2005 concealment, is due to appear in court on Wednesday morning, where he is expected to plead guilty to attempting to extort money from his mother and provide new information about what happened to the missing teenager.
LIMA, Peru >> A Dutch national who recently admitted to killing U. S. student Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005 was sent this week from the United States to Peru, where he will serve time for the murder of a Peruvian woman.
Joran van der Sloot will be transferred to Peruvian custody on Tuesday, Interpol’s head for the Andean country, Col. Aldo Avila, told The Associated Press.
Interpol had previously announced that Van der Sloot would arrive in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Monday afternoon. But Peruvian police later told local media that the flight had been postponed. The U. S. Justice Department said it would not comment on the timing of the extraditions for security reasons. Reasons.
Van der Sloot had been extradited to the United States to face penalties similar to those for Holloway’s disappearance, a case that has attracted foreign attention over the course of two decades.
A few days ago, he admitted to killing Holloway and disposing of his body. This revelation comes as he pleads guilty to charges of attempting to extort money from Holloway’s mother in exchange for information about the body’s location.
The U. S. government has jurisdiction to prosecute Van der Sloot for the 2005 homicide on an Aruban beach, where the statute of limitations for homicide has expired. But the revelations have yielded answers long sought by Holloway’s closest relatives.
The Dutch national was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the United States for extortion and wire fraud, but as part of his plea agreement, that sentence will be added to another in Peru, where he is serving a 28-year criminal sentence for Stephany’s murder. . Flowers in 2010.
