The bowler has not played for England since March 2021 due to injury.
Jofra Archer is set to make his long-awaited return to cricket in England in the new year following his return to the team for the one-day series in South Africa.
The rhythm pitcher, who burst onto the scene in surprising fashion in 2019 and played a key role in the World Cup triumph that summer, has been playing foreign cricket since March 2021 due to injury.
The 27-year-old suffered a series of elbow problems, requiring two surgeries, and then saw his return to action crumble when he suffered a fatigue fracture at his base in May.
But he worked hard with the England and Wales Cricket Board medical team on his long rehabilitation and joined the Lions team during the November education camp in November.
He played nine overs against England’s senior team in his preparation in Abu Dhabi, achieving intelligent speed and giving hope that he is close to completing his form.
Archer takes his place in a 14-man squad for the three-match tour of South Africa, a streak that was first scrapped in December 2020 after a Covid-19 alert saw England return home early.
Harry Brook’s continues with his first ODI call-up, with the Yorkshireman fresh from a leading role in the historic test victory in Pakistan and the T20 World Cup victory.
The 23-year-old has been present on England’s busy winter programme but didn’t rest until the test break in New Zealand in February, while others like Mark Wood and Joe Root sit down. Ben Duckett, who won the last of his 8 options of more than 50 in 2016, also returns to the fold after recovering in the T20 and Test configurations in recent months.
Reece Topley, who was left out of the T20 World Cup after tripping over a restrictive sponge, is also involved, but Liam Livingstone is absent with the knee injury he suffered in his debut test at Rawalpindi.
Sam Billings, Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, James Vince and Luke Wood were all on the last ODI team in Australia, this time they are absent.
