NEW YORK – The CDC warns that the JN. 1 subvariant of the coronavirus is now the “fastest-growing” variant in the United States.
It’s now causing about 20% of new COVID-19 infections in the country and is dominant in the Northeast, where it is estimated to be the cause of about a third of new cases.
Variant trackers say they expect JN. 1 to become the world’s leading coronavirus variant within weeks.
On Tuesday, the World Health Organization called it an attractive variant due to its “rapidly expanding spread,” but noted that the public health grade remains low.
According to fitness experts, the highly mutated JN. 1 also appears to benefit from the holidays and waning immunity following previous Covid injections.
In addition to getting vaccinated against COVID-19, “there are simple things other people can do, like wash their hands, wear a mask around other high-risk people, or, if they don’t feel well, stay home. ” that we all have the power to do,” said Dr. Kurt Williamson, associate professor in the Department of Biology at the College of William
