Seniors and others in Japan who will be eligible to receive state-subsidized coronavirus vaccines in April will have to pay up to 7,000 yen, or about $47, per dose.
The Health Ministry spoke on Friday about the price cap. Real expenditures could be reduced if vaccines were also subsidized by local governments.
Coronavirus vaccines will remain available until the end of March and the government will cover all expenses.
But starting in April, vaccines will be treated the same way as seasonal flu shots, and recipients will have to foot a portion of the bill.
Vaccination targets will be limited to seniors 65 and older, as well as seniors ages 60 to 64 who are at the highest risk of severe COVID if infected.
Others can also get the injections if they wish voluntarily, they would have to pay more than 7,000 yen.
