As coronavirus infections return across the country, an expert organization advising the Ministry of Health warned that the peak of what Japan’s eighth wave did is likely to be equivalent to or surpass the seventh record.

But there are sharp regional differences in trends, with Hokkaido and some northeastern prefectures such as Miyagi and Fukushima seeing immediate increases, according to data presented Wednesday at a weekly coronavirus advisory council meeting.
