Japanese PM testing for COVID-19, isolations

TOKYO >> Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, diagnosed with coronavirus on Sunday and canceled his planned trips while he isolates himself and recovers.

Kishida developed a mild fever and cough on Saturday night and underwent a COVID-19 PCR test, said Noriyuki Shikata, cabinet secretary for Public Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Prime Minister Kishida is isolated from his residence,” he told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The 65-year-old prime minister was on summer leave last week and was due to return to work on Monday. It is not known where or how it became infected.

Kishida will not attend an African progress convention later this month in Tunisia, but will participate online. He also postponed his for the Middle East.

Cases of coronavirus infections have recently increased in Japan, with most people, including Kishida, having been vaccinated. Other world leaders, including U. S. President Joe Biden, have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and have recovered.
