Japan reported a one-day record of 795 new coronavirus infections on Wednesday, surpassing the last peak set in April by dealing with the imminent risk of a wave of the fatal virus.

Osaka, Fukuoka and Aichi prefectures set new one-day records for new COVID-19 instances on Wednesday, media reported.

Osaka Prefecture showed 121 instances, the first time an outdoor Tokyo prefecture reported more than a hundred instances, while Fukuoka registered 61 instances and Aichi registered 64 instances. Fukuoka and Aichi set new records for the time of the day in a row.

Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said at a news convention that those who tested positive “were basically young, many of them without symptoms or mild symptoms,” adding that the infections had “spread from there.”

Across the country, several prefectures have reported new heights:

Meanwhile, in the capital, the metropolitan government reported 238 instances, surpassing 200s for the time in a row, Governor Yuriko Koike said. Wednesday’s number brought the total number of instances in the capital to 10,054, according to metropolitan government data.

The announcement came here when Koike asked citizens of the capital not to faint for non-essential purposes on the four-day weekend in Japan starting Thursday, amid emerging infections.

“The number of coronavirus patients with severe symptoms is increasing,” Koike said Tuesday. “It’s especially important for elderly people and those having pre-existing conditions to refrain from going out.”

On Sunday and Monday, instances in Tokyo were less than two hundred, 188 and 168, respectively, but increased to 237 on Tuesday.

Wednesday’s figure also came on the same day the central government presented the moot Go To Travel tourism promotion campaign. After the spikes in infections in Tokyo, the government announced Thursday that to and from the capital would no longer be included in the campaign.

The crusade added to considerations of the fatal virus, leading some travelers to and from Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures to increase the threat of the disease spreading to other areas.
