Japan showed a total of 1,440 new coronavirus cases on Sunday night, and the figure exceeded 1,000 for the sixth consecutive day.
Seven deaths related to the virus were also reported, three in Hokkaido.
Tokyo reported 255 new cases of coronavirus on the same day, the metropolitan government said, below 300 for the first time in five days amid developing considerations about a third wave of the virus in Japan.
The new instances included 68 between the 20s, 47s between the 30s and 43s between the age of 50 and people over the age of 25.
Sunday’s figure is based on 6,257 tests. The cumulative number of cases in the capital is 34,751 and the number of patients in critical condition was reduced from 3 to 38, one day after publishing the highest number since May 24.
Meanwhile, Hokkaido showed 209 cases, marking the fourth consecutive day in which the number exceeded two hundred, while the number of infections increased to 266 in Osaka Prefecture, surpassing two hundred for the sixth consecutive day.
In prefectures, new cases of infection totaled 114 in Kanagawa, 102 in Aichi, 80 in Saitama and 79 in Hyogo.
Despite the increase in infections, others continued to target popular tourist sites like the country over the weekend, as Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said he would conduct the government’s Go To Travel subsidy crusade for domestic tourism and denied the desire to claim some other state of emergency.
The government has sought to strike a balance between the fight against the spread of COVID-19 and the maintenance of social and economic activities since the lifting of the state of emergency in May.
