Japan is seeing a severe shortage of generic flu drugs amid flu and Covid-19, according to a report.
The number of flu cases according to facilities in Japan surpassed last week’s alert point, the Japan Times reported.
The Ministry of Health, which collects flu reports from about 5,000 medical centers across the country, has predicted the possibility of a first flu outbreak within a month.
With Sunday’s announcement, the ministry is now poised to tackle structural problems plaguing the pharmaceutical industry that have led to a shortage of generic drugs in the country.
The country has shut down 10 generic drug manufacturers since 2021 due to quality issues, the ministry said, according to the Japan Times. The Covid pandemic and the flu have led to supply shortages, the news outlet reported.
The source of cough medicine has declined by 15 percent, the ministry said. This comes as the country raised the influenza alert point and closed or closed a total of 1,772 schools.
The spread of seasonal flu is also feared, as it spreads regularly in winter.
“Several points are believed to have played a role in the current spread of the flu, adding a decline in immunity as (the flu) had not spread for a long time, and a build-up between Japan and abroad,” the Health Ministry said. An official was quoted through the media.
The official urged citizens to continue their efforts to avoid infection as they did with Covid.
