JAKARTA: Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said on Wednesday (September 9) that the city would re-enforce large-scale social restrictions amid a steady increase in the number of infections.
In a speech, Baswedan said he had to pull the “emergency brake” as Jakarta continued to face a rising death rate from COVID-19, as well as limited isolation rooms and intensive care rooms (ICUs) for coronavirus patients. .
The COVID-19 death in Jakarta is highest since mid-August, the governor revealed.
Jakarta recently has 4,053 isolation beds, 77% of which are occupied. If the emergency brake is pulled, the remaining beds can be fully occupied until Sept. 17, Baswedan said.
Likewise, the governor said that it implied that the 528 beds of the extensive care unit would be exhausted until September 15 if measures are not taken.
“Based on the 3 data, the mortality rate, the use of isolation beds and the use of the special COVID-19 ICU (beds), this shows that the epidemic scenario in Jakarta is in an ’emergency’ scenario. . Two days ago, the president forcefully told all of us not to restart the economy until the fitness scenario was under control.
“Obviously, it puts fitness at the top of the agenda. So, in this emergency, there are many features for Jakarta besides pulling the emergency brake as soon as possible,” Baswedan said in his broadcast speech.
Jakarta will return to a partial lockdown, said Baswedan, who calls on citizens to work and conduct worship activities from their homes.
The businesses that are not essential will have to operate from home starting Monday, September 14. Only certain that the essentials can continue to function in the place. More main points will be revealed soon, Baswedan said.
Entertainment venues and parks will also be closed, but restaurants and cafes will continue to operate as long as they only serve takeout.
“However, I urge (everyone) everything from home,” said the governor.
“Now it is an emergency, more urgent than at the beginning of the pandemic. “
He reiterated that the people of Jakarta do not leave the capital if it is not necessary.
Jakarta announced its first instances of COVID-19 in early March and began implementing a partial blockade on April 10. In June, the city entered a phase of observing large-scale social restrictions and slowly reopened business after COVID-19 instances began to decline. .
But in days, the Indonesian capital has observed more than 1,000 new infections consistent with the day and recorded a total of 49,397 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, making it the epicentre of the pandemic in the archipelago.
Indonesia lately has a total of 203,342 COVID-19 and 8,336 similar deaths.
