In a recent study published in the Journal of Nursing Management, Italian researchers conducted a qualitative study of pregnant women’s reports of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic to perceive adverse effects on physical and intellectual fitness related to pandemic restrictions during pregnancy and childbirth.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused 21,814,856 cases and 175,407 deaths in Italy. Since the beginning of 2020, mitigation measures, such as social distancing and confinement, have been implemented in the country to restrict the spread of the virus.
Restrictions on the admission of family circle members to hospitals have particularly reduced the family circle presented to pregnant women admitted to maternity wards, resulting in increased tension among these pregnant women. reports among recent moms due to pandemic-related tension.

In the existing study, researchers used a narrative-based medicine technique to perceive reports of pregnant women over the age of 18 admitted to the maternity ward of a hospital in Alessandria, Italy, between November 2021 and April 2022. After obtaining informed consent, patients were asked to write about their feelings and reports about the first wave of the pandemic and forced isolation, which were then collected anonymously.
The narrative consisted of patient reports in social, institutional, family and linguistic contexts. The data from the recordings were phenomenologically analyzed to perceive conversational sequences and initial labels, which were then grouped into broad themes and subtopics.
The effects were reported by 50 mothers, 28 of whom were pregnant for the first time and 22 were pregnant with their momentary child. The women in the organization were predominantly Italian and had an average age of 32. 66. Approximately 56% of participants had a high school diploma.
The stories of the pregnant women for the first time and moment were grouped into five major themes. The first theme described emotions of sadness and worry related to loneliness due to the absence of hospitalization of a family member or caregiver. Instead, the topic of moment basically consisted of emotions of peace and tranquility due to the competence of the hospital staff, who compensated for the absence of members of the circle of relatives by offering constant comfort and attention.
The third theme expresses the balance between the emotions of comfort and tension related to having a circle of family members near childbirth. While most moms sought to have a circle of family members deliver them, they also admitted to enjoying loneliness and time spent with the baby under COVID-19 restrictions.
Similarly, the fourth theme also highlighted mothers’ positive emotions about being able to care for and bond with their young children without the presence or involvement of other family members. Most mothers expressed an attitude of change and admitted that their initial fears of being worried about a newborn without a circle of relatives, then felt like an opportunity to identify a symbiotic date with their baby.
The last topic focused on emotions related to the physical pain of childbirth and the circumstance of having to go through those pains without the help of a member of the family circle. Although many women are resilient and admit to having unknown reserves of strength in the past. , the lack of a circle of relatives to assist childbirth does not seem to be compensated by the only competent and concerned caregivers.
In short, the study used narrative-based medicine to explore reports of pregnant women being admitted to the maternity ward of a hospital in Italy about social restrictions imposed by COVID-19.
Overall, the study reported that emotions of fear, loneliness, and sadness were greatly alleviated by the additional care and support provided by professional and competitive hospital staff. Also, many moms admitted to feeling calm and non-violent and enjoying the quiet. time they had of concern and bonding with their bather through members without a circle of relatives. The only facet where many mothers felt the lack of help from the circle of relatives was the physical pain of childbirth.
