My hikers ask me what my favorite position in Israel is to advise them. As a licensed tour consultant whose center is connected to the entire country, it’s hard to pick a favorite because I love everything! However, if I had to make him choose, there are two puts that have the deepest meaning for me; Tzfat and Hebron, where we will be hiking today (click here to watch my Hebron tour skipper video). who regularly only stop at the Grotto of the Patriarchs (click here for more information on this special site). Today we will venture off the beaten track and stop in biblical Hebron, one of the oldest and holiest cities in the world!

Hebron is mentioned 87 times in the (Hebrew) Bible. When Abraham entered Israel, he settled on the plains of Mamre, which is in Hebron. He built an altar to G-d and monotheism from that sacred position (Genesis 13).

In Hebron, the Jewish country was born. At the age of 99, Abraham commanded through G-d that he be circumcised. Because of this action, an eternal covenant was sealed between G-d, Abraham, and their descendants (where they became “Chosen One”). G-d also promised him a son, Isaac.

Three days later, Abraham, who was still suffering from the procedure, had 3 angels appear. According to Jewish sources, G-d sought Abraham to rest. He knew that Abraham felt a strong legal responsibility to be kind to other people, and he didn’t need Abraham had to fight while he recovered. Therefore, G-d made the temperature incredibly high that day (see Genesis 18:1) so that other people would not walk around and “disturb” Abraham. However, G-d noticed that Abraham’s failure to simply show or do kindness to others caused him more pain than his physical ailments! Therefore, G-d sent 3 “men” who, unbeknownst to Abraham, were actually angels.

Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rivka (Rebekah), and Jacob and Leah lived the rest of their lives in Hebron, and they are all buried there in the cave of Mashpelah (read more, click here).

After the Exodus from Egypt, the Children of Israel intended to enter Israel in a short period of time. When they were able to enter, Moses sent 12 spies to inspect the land and inquire about the population they would have to defeat. They visited Hebron, where they witnessed imitations of giants (remnants of the Nephilim) and the formidable city walls that built them.

After 40 days, they returned to the camp of the Israelites. Ten of the spies convinced the others that the country was invincible, while 2 of them (Joshua and Caleb) had religion in Gd and said, “The country is very, very good!” If G-d wants us, He will bring us to this land and give it to us (Numbers 14:7-8). ” But other people panicked and cried profusely. As punishment for their lack of religion (expected at its highest non-secular level), the Children of Israel were destined to spend 40 years in the desert, where this generation would eventually die, and only their young (anyone 19 and under) could just enter the country. According to Jewish sources, this decree did not apply to women or the tribe of Levi (including their men) who entered the country 40 years later (they had not taken part in the “rebellion”) Arrayed as a compliment for speaking out for With sudden access to the land, Joshua later became the one who led the Jews to the Holy Land, while Caleb and his descendants gained ownership of Hebron and its landscape as an everlasting inheritance (Joshua 15:13).

During the time of the judges and the monarchy, Hebron continued to be a vital Jewish city (both religiously and administratively). In fact, for the first 7 years of King David’s reign, this holy city was the de facto capital of Israel, until a vital occasion occurred that would replace the course of global history.
