Merav Michaeli’s moves are like ‘an arrow in the eyes of the Israelis’
Israel’s Transport Minister Merav Michaeli participated Saturday in the launch of a new line of immediate transit buses in the northern coastal city of Haifa.
She was widely criticized for participating in the official inauguration on Shabbat.
Before taking the new line, Michaeli spoke with a small organization of protesters who had performed a kiddush, a Shabbat-branding ritual, at the site. One of the protesters told the minister that his movements were like “an arrow in the eyes of Israelis. “”
In response, Michaeli cited the fact that Haifa, which has a combined population, has long offered public transportation on Shabbat, unlike Jewish-majority cities where buses and trains don’t run from Friday night until Saturday after sunset.
“There are options now,” he later tweeted.
He also called for nationwide public shipping on Saturdays.
“Now is the time to make our voices heard,” he said. “You all deserve freedom of movement, you all deserve to go wherever, when and how you want. “
According to Walla’s news site, invitations for the occasion were sent through Michaeli’s Labour Party and the Ministry of Transport, underscoring the sensitivity of the factor of official Shabbat occasions.
The minister’s decision to attend the occasion provoked the disapproval of several parliamentarians.
Michaeli has already been widely criticized in recent weeks for her efforts to promote public transportation on the weekly rest day, especially in Tel Aviv. on Shabbat.
The lack of public transportation on Shabbat stemmed from an agreement reached between the ultra-Orthodox network and Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, even before the state was formed.
However, Haifa, whose population is Jewish or Arab, is an exception to the rule, as public transport operates every day of the week.
In 2019, the municipality of Tel Aviv opened bus routes for citizens of the city and its surroundings.
A vote conducted through the Hiddush defense organization following the resolution found that among Israeli Jews, 71 favored Shabbat transportation, adding 94 secular Israelis.
