On Friday, newly appointed Health Minister Aryeh Deri announced new COVID-19 needs for travelers from China, joining other countries imposing restrictions due to a surge in infections.
The move, Deri’s first since taking office on Thursday, comes after China’s strict antivirus controls were lifted.
The ministry was asked to tell airlines not to allow non-Israelis from China without a negative PCR test.
Deri gave the order after consulting with senior officials of the Ministry of Health. The order does not apply to Israeli citizens, who, however, have been asked to avoid any travel to China that is not strictly necessary.
Deri also ordered the ministry to set up voluntary testing stations for those arriving at Ben Gurion Airport.
In doing so, Israel joins a number of countries that require travelers from China.
Israel, which had some of the strictest restrictions, only reopened its skies in March.
Starting January 5, all travelers to the U. S. are in the U. S. U. S. citizens from China will need to write a COVID-19 check no more than two days in advance and provide a negative check before boarding their flight. The checks apply to anyone two years of age and older, the United States said Wednesday.
Other countries have taken steps in an effort to prevent infections from spreading beyond China’s borders. India, South Korea and Taiwan require virus checking for visitors from China.
The Lunar New Year, which begins on Jan. 22, is generally China’s busiest season, and China announced Tuesday that it will resume issuing passports for tourism for the first time since the pandemic began in 2020.
