Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved a new weather plan that will require its ministries to submit action plans through 2023 that will detail arrangements to “address the climate crisis. “
This resolution comes ahead of the UN climate convention in Sharm el-Sheikh, scheduled for November 6-18.
“We are taking a vital step in preparing government ministries for the climate crisis by setting a deadline for the submission of a preparedness plan that will require all relevant ministries to submit annual reports to the Cabinet on their progress in implementing the action plans,” the acting prime minister said. Minister Yair Lapid said.
“We see the damage of the climate crisis, the ultimate serious crisis facing humanity today, in our entire lifetime. Storms at sea cause death and destruction around the world; due to the climate crisis, they worsen and appear more frequently,” said Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg.
“Advance arrangements at the national point are imperative to save lives and the environment. The step we are taking today is a vital step in preparing Israel to deal with the damage and adjustments wrought by the climate crisis.
According to this decision, the cabinet ordered all government ministries to draft and submit “preparedness plans for climate renewal” until the end of 2023.
Plans shall be drafted according to climate replacement scenarios ready through the National Emergency Authority (NEA) and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and priorities and climate trend analyses ready through the Climate Change Authority of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
The National Security Council guilty of inter-ministerial coordination; However, a professional representative applying for the Ministry of Environmental Protection will be guilty of helping other government departments identify their wishes and draft their plans.
Several government ministries are to blame for other spaces affected by the climate crisis, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
“Warming and reducing the number of bloodless nights” replaces agricultural products suitable for Israel. Marine infrastructure will need to adapt to projected sea-level rise. Israel’s cities will need to adapt by expanding shade and reforestation to counter the longest severe heatwaves. “
In this context, the National Emergency Authority has started preparing weather replacement scenarios in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Earlier this year, the Authority had already published the first flood scenario. In the coming years, more scenarios will be released for government aid agencies preparing for expected regional events, such as heat waves, wildfires, snowstorms, and extreme cold.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection recently passed the meteorological law on first reading in the Knesset and is expected to continue advancing it in the next Knesset.
The local government is also drafting “specific preparedness plans” for the climate crisis. Meanwhile, the ministry proposes a national plan to create shade and freshness in urban spaces by planting trees, as well as a plan to rehabilitate waterways and inspire local government to maintain grassy urban green spaces.
