Israeli President Isaac Herzog participated Wednesday night in the classic reenactment of the Hakhel rite and Simchat Beit Hashoeivah at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
This rite is held every seven years in the presence of the Israeli president. The culture of Hakhel, which means “to gather,” has its roots in the Book of Deuteronomy. Originally, the rite was held at the site of the Jerusalem Sukkot Temple in the year following a full year, or shmita, where certain agricultural cultures of the Jewish people are expected.
However, Hakhel’s biblical commandment only takes effect when all other Jews live in Israel. This culture was revived through Chief Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog, grandfather of Pare livingnt Herzog, in symbolic form.

“Herzog faced the crowd and read Psalm 122, which speaks of ‘Jerusalem built, a united city,’ and Isaiah 52:7-12, which he read with the classic psalmody, ‘Raise up shouts to one, O ruins of Jerusalem!For Jehovah will comfort his people, redeem Jerusalem,” according to a statement from the president’s office.
Before starting, Herzog addressed the crowd and said, “As a proud son of the Jewish people and as president of the State of Israel, I feel compelled to inaugurate this event, founded by my late grandfather Yitzhak Isaac HaLevi Herzog, which all the leaders of the rabbis of Israel had the privilege of observing.
“My late father, Chaim Herzog, the sixth president of the State of Israel, also held this instance in 1987. From there, I pray that the spirit of this instance will remain before our eyes at all times, as a country and as a state. May we and the whole House of Israel – in combipaís – deserve a satisfied and blessed year and satisfied feasts. “
