Iraqi PM Orders Crackdown on Trademark Violations

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq’s prime minister has ordered a crackdown on local companies operating under the name of foreign brands without legal authorization. This is according to a statement from the prime minister’s office on Wednesday. The Associated Press reported last week that Iraq has become a major means of trademark violations and piracy. In one striking example, a fake Starbucks chain operates under the logo of the foreign coffee company in Baghdad. Starbucks filed a lawsuit to try to prevent trademark infringement, but the case was halted after the owner allegedly threatened lawyers hired through the café.
