Iraq to boost dry canal project

Southern to Northern Iraq Project

Iraq is expected to dramatically accelerate the time needed to build a massive dry canal that will connect its south to the north and then to Turkey, according to local media.

Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani met Wednesday with a government team overseeing the allocation and representatives of a foreign company tasked with preparing its plans to discuss the progress of the 4-year assignment, Shafaq News and other Iraqi networks reported Thursday.

They quoted Sudani as saying that the allocation is one of the maximum systems for the progress of Iraq’s shipping industry, as it would go a long way in expanding business activity and attracting investment.

“Sudani has given orders to speed up the allocation and the time needed for its execution, as it is one of the strategic assignments for the government,” they said.

The “dry canal” will link the southern port of Faw, structured since 2020, with ports in northern Iraq and Turkish ports with the aim of boosting exports and imports.
