Iraq closes border with Kuwait due to coronavirus

BAGHDAD

Iraq closed its border crossing with Kuwait on Monday over fears of the novel coronavirus.

An Iraqi customs official said the Safwan crossing had been closed to travelers and goods at Kuwait’s request.

“The terminal will remain closed until more activities take place due to coronavirus fears,” the source said.

On Monday, Kuwait’s Health Ministry said three other people, including a Saudi national, returning from Iran had been infected with the virus, which has killed another 2,444 people in China, the epicenter of the outbreak.

The coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19, has affected more than 25 other countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, France, Russia, Spain and India.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a health emergency.
