BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Iraq’s parliament elected Kurd Abdul Latif Rashid as president on Thursday, according to two lawmakers, paving the way for the formation of a new government and ending a year-long stalemate.

Rashid, 78, is a UK-trained engineer who served as Iraq’s water minister from 2003 to 2010. He has 15 days to invite a candidate from the largest parliamentary bloc to form a government.
