Iraq and the Gulf prepare for a severe heatwave with temperatures reaching 50°C or more

The Arab Meteorological Center has issued a stern warning about an upcoming “scorching” heatwave that is expected to last until Wednesday, with temperatures expected to reach 50 degrees Celsius in several Arab countries, adding Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the United States. In a bulletin published on Monday, it was noted that significant parts of the Arabian Peninsula will be affected by this extreme heat wave. The heat wave is caused by an anticyclonic formula that intensifies in the upper layers of the environment and by a thermal depression formula that is accentuated in eastern Arabia.  

The Iraqi meteorological authority also detailed its forecast for the week, predicting temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius amid the formation of dust. On Tuesday, temperatures will reach a high of 49 degrees Celsius in Basra and Maysan, 48 degrees Celsius in Najaf, Thi Qar and Muthanna and 46 degrees Celsius in Baghdad. Clear skies with some clouds will predominate, with mild temperatures in the central and southern provinces and stability in the north.

The heat is expected to persist throughout the week, with temperatures remaining around 40 degrees Celsius. For Friday, greater dust activity is expected, with transparent and warm environments throughout the country.

Both meteorological agencies advise citizens to avoid exposure to the sun during the day and stay hydrated with fresh liquids. These excessive situations pose significant risks to fitness and daily activities, requiring caution and preparedness in the region.
