UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Iran on Monday suggested countries attend a U. S. -hosted assembly at the United Nations on protests in Iran sparked by the death of a young woman in police custody, according to a letter reported via Reuters accusing Washington of politicizing human rights.
The United States and Albania will hold an informal Security Council meeting on Wednesday, attended by all members of the United Nations. Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi and Iranian-born actress and activist Nazanin Boniadi will give a briefing.
“The United States has no genuine and authentic considerations about human rights in Iran or anywhere else,” Iranian Ambassador to the UN Amir Saeid Irakani wrote in the letter to UN member states.
He described the protests as internal and wrote that it would be “counterproductive to the promotion of human rights” if the UN Security Council discussed the issue.
“The United States lacks the political, moral and legal qualifications to hold such a meeting, which distorts the principles of human rights,” Iravani wrote.
Iran has been plagued by protests since the death of a 22-year-old Kurd, Mahsa Amini, in police custody last month. The unrest has become popular with Iranians from all walks of life, posing one of the boldest and most demanding situations for devout leaders since the 1979 revolution.
Iran blamed its enemies and proxies for the unrest.
The assembly at the United Nations on Wednesday aims to “highlight the ongoing crackdown on women and members of ethnic minority teams in Iran” and identify tactics to promote credible and independent investigations into rights violations in Iran, the US project to the UN. Said.
Iravani questioned the U. S. commitment to protecting Iranian women and called on U. N. member states to “explicitly oppose those reckless and harmful practices through which the U. S. seeks to set such a harmful precedent and politicize human rights issues for its political agenda. “
