Highly experienced coach Carlos Queiroz will lead Iran to the 2022 World Cup, having been called up at the last minute.
The 69-year-old was reappointed in September, two months before the start of the flagship event in Qatar. This will be the third time he has led the country to a World Cup, following organization-level departures in 2014 and 2018.
The Melli team was in the past under the control of Dragan Skocic, who led them through an impressive qualifying campaign. However, a replacement for leadership in Iran’s football federation resulted in Queiroz’s return.
The former Manchester United assistant’s previous tenure is the longest in the Iranian national team’s history, spanning only about 8 years, from April 2011 to January 2019.
Since then, the Portuguese has kept pace with Colombia and Egypt, and led the latter to position themselves in the Africa Cup of Nations in February, wasting Senegal in the final in consequences.
The veteran coach, who has played for Sporting CP, Nagoya Grampus, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Real Madrid and Portugal, has not been able to lead Iran to the knockout stages of the last two World Cups.
They took a point at organisational level in 2014, drawing with Nigeria losing to Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At the 2018 World Cup, Iranian coach Carlos Queiroz started by beating Morocco 1-0, before squandering 1-0 against Spain and drawing 1-1 with Portugal. A four-point run was their most productive return at the World Cup, but the Iranians were eliminated as Spain and Portugal finished one point.
In the Asian Cup, Queiroz led Iran to the quarterfinals in 2015 and semifinals in 2019, the defeat to Japan in this last duel led them to retire.
Iran will face England, Wales and the United States in Group B of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with Carlos Queiroz as coach.
