ARBIL: Iran on Sunday night introduced new movements opposed to Kurdish opposition teams in Iraqi Kurdistan, local teams and officials said, at the time of such an attack in a week.
Tehran accuses teams of stoking unrest in Iran, which has been rocked by two months of protests sparked by the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini.
Amini died in custody on September 16, days after being arrested by Iran’s moral police for allegedly violating the country’s strict women’s dress code.
Iran’s “Revolutionary Guard Corps has bombed Iranian Kurdish parties from behind,” Iraqi Kurdistan’s counterterrorism branch said, mentioning whether there were casualties.
The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) said Iran had attacked it with missiles and suicide drones in Koya and Jejnikan, near Arbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.
“These indiscriminate attacks take place at a time when the Iranian terrorist regime cannot prevent the ongoing protests in (Iranian) Kurdistan,” said the KDPI, Iran’s oldest Kurdish party.
The Iranian Kurdish nationalist organization Komala said the moves also had their advantages in northern Iraq.
“Our headquarters attacked through the Islamic regime tonight. We have been consciously prepared for those kinds of attacks and have no casualties at this time,” he said on Twitter.
U. S. Central Command, which oversees U. S. military operations. A U. S. military official in the Middle East, condemned “illegal” Iranian moves near Irbil.
“We condemn Iran’s cross-border movements of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles tonight,” Centcom commander Gen. Michael Kurilla said in a statement.
“Such indiscriminate and unlawful attacks endanger civilians, violate Iraqi sovereignty and undermine the hard-fought security and stability of Iraq and the Middle East. “
Iraqi state news firm INA reported on today’s attacks, referring to “Iranian missile and drone strikes” opposed to “three Iranian opposition parties in (Iraqi) Kurdistan. “
The new moves come less than a week after cross-border attacks through Iran killed at least one person.
Tehran accuses Kurdish-Iranian opposition teams in northern Iraq of stoking “riots” at home and has stepped up attacks since the protests began.
Iran launched attacks in late September that killed more than a dozen people in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.
Iraqi Kurdistan is home to several Iranian Kurdish opposition teams abroad that have waged armed opposition to Tehran.
In years, its activities have declined, but the wave of protests in Iran has again inflamed tensions.
