Iran authorizes UN nuclear control body to one of two sites after pressure

Iran has allowed the UN nuclear control body to access one of the two sites it agreed last week to allow access after a long confrontation, while Tehran’s enriched uranium reserves have increased further, according to quarterly reports from the company on Friday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency inspected one of the sites and took environmental samples, according to one of two reports received through Reuters, referring to samples of nuclear curtain lines that may have been present.

Agency inspectors will go to the other site “at the end of September 2020 on a date already agreed with Iran, to take environmental samples,” the report said.

The report indicated that Iran’s stock of low-enriched uranium (LEU) increased by 534 kg in the last quarter, roughly the same as in the last 3 months, to 2,105.4 kg.

That’s more than 10 times the 202.8 kg limit set through Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with primary powers, which Iran violated in reaction to Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 and the reprinting of sanctions opposing Tehran.

However, stocks remain well below the many tons of enriched uranium that Iran had accumulated before the 2015 agreement.

Tehran is enriching at a fissile purity of 4.5%, which, above the 3.67% limit of the agreement, is still far from the 20% reached before the agreement.About 90% purity is considered military quality, suitable for an atomic bomb.

On 26 August, the first stopover in Tehran through IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi, Iran agreed to allow UN inspectors access to two sites suspected of previously harboring covert uranium conversion and nuclear testing activities.

While the IAEA claims to have the right to read about such sites without authorization, Iran objected because at least some of the data on them comes from a large number of documents about its activities beyond those said by Tehran’s main opponent in the Middle East, Israel.has taken over in Iran..
