Showing their commitment to nature conservation, the elderly widows of Vrindavan on Thursday participated in a plantation to mark “International Widows’ Day” at Krishna Kutir Mahila Sadan and Maa Sharda Ashram.
They planted 75 saplings in the shelters in light of the 75th year of India’s independence.
The initiative in this regard was taken through Sulabh International, an organization concerned about the many widows living in ashrams in Vrindavan since 2012.
One of the elderly widows, Chhavi Dasi, said: “This is the first time we have planted saplings to commemorate this day and that in itself is our determination towards nature conservation.
To mention, Padma Bhushan Award winner Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak has been instrumental in achieving a positive replacement in the lives of those widows after facilitating festival celebrations such as Holi and Diwali and other rituals for them. These widows were not otherwise allowed to participate in such occasions because of the various social stigmas attributed to them.
President Kovind is expected on June 27
