Enrollment of international students in U. S. schools and universitiesThe U. S. economy appears to be a symptom of a recovery from sharp declines over the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to an “Open Doors” survey just released through the Institute for International Education, the total number of foreign scholars in the United States increased by nearly 4% in 2021-2022. This accumulation was reinforced by an additional gain of 9% in the existing autumn half.
Total foreign enrollment 948,519 scholarship holders in the 2021-22 school year, up from 914,095 last year. The uptick still leaves overall foreign student enrollment below its all-time high, set in 2018-2019 with 1,095,299 scholarship holders. International fellows now account for 4. 7% of overall school student enrollment in the United States.
The grand total includes both scholars who screen users in the United States and those who are enrolled online but live abroad.
One of the main participants in the uptick was a dramatic increase in the number of newly enrolled foreign students, which increased by 80% compared to last year, which had suffered a reduction of around 100,000 students.
International graduate student enrollment, which exceeded 17%, also saw an increase.

China remains the largest source of foreign scholars coming to the U. S. Even though its overall enrollment is down 9%, a sign that Covid-related restrictions are still hampering recruitment there.
