Education Committee

In an effort to continue discussions and advocacy for rural education in the SDGs, county councillors followed the formal terms of reference for their ad hoc committee on rural education at their council assembly on October 17.

The committee, which was created in 2019 in reaction to school closure processes initiated through the Conseil scolaire de district du Haut-Canada and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est de l’Ontario in 2016, achieved a number of goals, adding a report on rural schooling and hosting a symposium on schooling. To continue to focus on the next term and serve as a imaginable mobilization organization when the Ontario government lifts the moratorium on school closures, the committee now has a budget and a formal mandate. .

The committee will continue to have one representative from each lower-level municipality. These appointments are selected through each of the municipalities and may be an elected official or a non-professional appointment. Unlike the Police Services Board or the SDG Library Board, appointments are advised through lower-level forums that are only requested through the higher-level board. Appointments are for a period of two years.

The committee’s mandate is to identify tactics for rural academics’ access to education and make recommendations to the SDG Board. The committee was allocated a budget of $15,000 consistent with the year. Between 4 and six meetings of the Rural Education Committee will be held. Board committee, meetings are open to the public. Nominations for the Board of Directors will be requested in January.

Largest surplus

BROCKVILLE: An increase in enrollment on the Upper Canada District School Board may result in a larger-than-expected surplus for 2022-2023.

Administrators won the monetary forecasts at their Oct. 27 meeting, apparently the board saw an increase in enrollment of about 500 students, more than expected when the budget was approved on June 1. Since most of the board’s investment is student-based This, combined with $200,000 in additional investments for priorities and partnerships, has resulted in a projected surplus of $800,000, a backlog of $600,000 since June.

No recommendations were made on budget adjustments, and Executive Superintendent of Commercial Services and Treasurer Jeremy Hobbs told administrators that inflationary pressures, emerging interest rates, labor and supply chain shortages, and long-term COVID-19 waves may simply adjust the overall fiscal situation. His next board update on the 2022-23 budget is scheduled for January.

works

SOUTH LANCASTER: Ducks Unlimited Canada will be on site for several weeks in the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area this fall, operating with systems that help maintain optimal conditions for flora and fauna in the swamp.

In the 1980s and 1990s a water control formula consisting of pumps and through a partnership with Ducks Unlimited was installed, and this fall’s works will maintain earthen berms and circular dam pumping equipment. Water levels will be temporarily reduced in the swamp to facilitate painting works and, for the safety of guests, some trails will be closed when machinery is provided or hazardous situations exist on site. The Raisin Region Conservation Authority said signs will be installed to indicate when trails are closed.

The paintings are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks’ Wetland Conservation Partnership Program.

In addition to these paintings, the RRCA said other paintings continue in the swamp, such as restoring grasslands, installing nesting structures for waterfowl, planting local plants and rebuilding the swamp’s main parking lot.
