YAKARTA – Medical experts have criticized the unsolicited involvement of the Indonesian Intelligence Unit (BIN) and the military in efforts to cure Covid-19, saying related clinical trials violated foreign protocols.
This came after the army chief, General Andika Perkasa, announced Saturday (August 15) that Indonesia was preparing to produce drugs to fight coronavirus and that he hoped that BPOM, the Indonesian equivalent of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, would authorize 3 combinations of existing drugs he said could cure Covid-19.
BIN Secretary General Bambang Sunarwibowo told MetroTV on Tuesday night (August 18) that his company had started its business in March, researchers at The University of Airlangga, for fear of the maximum mortality rate and immediate spread of the virus in Indonesia. and that BIN was the investment of the project.

Airlangga University and BIN first announced that they had discovered five combinations of drugs to combat Covid-19 in June. In the clinical trials that followed, they implemented 3 of those five combinations. The 3 associations are Lopinavir / Ritonavir and Azithromycin; Lopinavir / Ritonavir and Doxycycline; Hydrochloroquine and azithromycin.
In a presentation report on his clinical trial, Airlangga University said the drugs tested showed their effectiveness after 3 to seven days of administration, and noted that evaluation of renal, liver and cardiac purposes later proved normal.
The trials were conducted between 7 July and 4 August. Of the 1,127 subjects who participated in the initial phase, 754 qualified after assembling the inclusion criteria, the 16-page report noted through The Straits Times.
Researchers should specify the inclusion and exclusion criteria for participation in each clinical trial, taking into account the age, gender and medical history of the participants.
