Eight other people in Indonesia who did not comply with mask restrictions were reportedly ordered to dig graves for those who died from COVID-19 as punishment.
The Jakarta Post reported that the local government in East Java Province handed down the bachelor sentence in opposition to 8 other people who were not dressed in masks. Sunyono, head of Cerme district in the region, said the punishment would act as a deterrent.
“There are only 3 undertakers right now, so I think I could get those other people to paint with them,” He told Indonesian news site Tribun News. Ngabetan.
Sunyono said that due to the buildup of infections in the area, the government had to develop protocols.
“I hope this can create a deterrent effect against rape,” he said, noting that the other 8 people dug only the graves and did not participate in the actual burials of bodies inflamed with the virus.
Indonesia has had more than 220,000 cases of coronavirus and more than 8,800 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to a johns Hopkins University account.
