The number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 6. 39 million after the country reported 81,484 new infections in the past 24 hours, while similar deaths were just under 100,000, the Health Ministry showed on Friday.
Deaths from coronavirus infections rose from 1,095 in the past 24 hours to 99,773, the ministry said. India has recovered 78,877 covid patients in the past 24 hours, bringing the total recoveries to 53,52,078.
India ranks second only to the United States in terms of total number of cases and has a higher chance of infections as a giant portion of the population is still exposed to the virus, a survey showed on Tuesday.
A total of 7,67,17,728 samples were for the coronavirus, as of October 1. Of those, 10,97,947 samples were taken yesterday, the Indian Council of Medical Research reported.
