More than 100 people were killed and many others injured in a stampede at a Hindu religious event in the northern India state of Uttar Pradesh, where thousands of worshippers gathered.

Most of the dead so far are women and youth who appeared to have suffocated in a ballast in Hathras district, said Ashish Kumar, the district magistrate.
