SRINAGAR, India – India said Monday that its infantrymen had foiled the Chinese army’s “provocative” movements near a disputed border in the Ladakh region a few months after the start of the deadliest stagnation of rival nations in decades.
The Chinese military said it is taking “mandatory measures in response,” without giving details.
Local army commanders from both countries met along the disputed border on Monday to address the issues, India’s Defense Ministry said.He said India was committed to the discussion “but is also committed to protecting its territorial integrity.”
The statement said China’s People’s Liberation Army “carried out military provocation moves Saturday night to replace the prestige quo” and “violated past consensus reached during military and diplomatic clashes” at the deadlock in the bloodless desert region.
In Beijing, foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said border forces were communicating on recent issues, but did not give details.
“Chinese border troops continue to act in strict compliance with the royal line and have never crossed the line for any activity,” Zhao told reporters in a daily briefing.
In a statement, China’s Ministry of Defense accused Indian troops of crossing established lines and creating provocations along the southern shore of Lake Pangong and in nearby areas.
“The Chinese military is now taking action in response, largely following progress and resolutely safeguarding sovereignty over Chinese territory, as well as peace and stability along the border,” he said.
India’s Ministry of Defense issued its after a day-long break and gave no main points on the nature of the new incident.
Two Indian security officials said more than two dozen Chinese entered Indian territory on Saturday night, but were blocked by Indian troops and forced to return.
Officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with government regulations, said the incident involved a physical confrontation.
The Ministry of Defence said Indian troops “have taken steps to strengthen our positions and thwart China’s intentions to unilaterally replace the facts on the ground.”
The activity took place on the southern shore of Lake Pangong, a glacial lake divided across the de facto border between rivals and where the india-China clash began in early May on the northern flank of the lake.
Indian army experts said the most recent incident occurred in the Chushul area, where both sides had a good reputation in their positions.
