BENGALURU: India reported record jumps in new instances and deaths of COVID-19 on Thursday (September 10), bringing its number of instances to 4. 4 million, according to figures from the Ministry of Health.
In the last 24 hours, 95,735 new infections have been detected, with 1,172 deaths representing the highest mortality figures in more than a month, to raise the death toll above 75,000.
Infections are developing faster in India than anywhere else in the world, and the United States is the most severely affected country.
As the epicentre of the pandemic moves toward India, there is no sign that it is peaking at the time when the world’s most populous country. While bars opened wednesday for the first time since closing, it adds more cases a day than any other country since the start of the previous pandemic this year.
It also records more deaths than any country: an average of more than 1,000 deaths consistent with the day in the next two weeks.
The Americas still account for more than all deaths worldwide due to the highest number of deaths in Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador. India’s mortality rate is around 1%, while Brazil and the United States have death rates of about 3%, in line with the global average.
On average, more than 5,600 people die each day from COVID-19, according to knowledge-based Reuters estimates of more than two weeks.
